International Genetic Solutions

In December last year, Shorthorn Beef ran a series of member workshops designed to provide members with further education regarding International Genetic Solutions (IGS).

In 2018 Shorthorn Beef began exploring IGS as a possible genetics service provider for the Shorthorn breed. Whilst this is certainly a large undertaking, IGS offers breeders many benefits.

The workshops were attended by around 140 breeders who heard presentations from Luke Bowman and Bill Zimmerman, IGS and Graham Winnell, Shorthorn Beef.

IGS is the world’s largest cattle genetic evaluation system with approximately 18 million animals and 350,000 new registrations added annually.

It is a collaborative multi-breed evaluation, made up of 13 progressive North American breed associations representing 8 different breeds including Red Angus, Simmental, Limousin and US and Canadian Shorthorns. Currently there are individual Australian breeders already using the IGS evaluation system.

  • IGS has a progressive and inclusive culture.
  • IGS has one of the best science teams in the industry.
  • IGS expands the effective Shorthorn gene pool with Australian, USA and Canadian Shorthorns all compared in the one genetic evaluation system.
  • IGS provides opportunities to accelerate genetic gain with better use of genomics and improved ability to incorporate commercial data.
  • IGS offers weekly evaluations through the use of BOLT software.
  • IGS offers multi-breed analysis and allows for effective analysis of crossbred, composite and multi-breed cattle.
  • IGS offers greater efficiencies which allows the Shorthorn breed to further develop new genetic and genomic technologies.

Members are reminded that currently nothing has changed and that they should continue to submit their data and manage their day to day recording needs exactly as they have always done.

The process is of evaluating IGS is an ongoing one and Shorthorn Beef will ensure members have more details as they come to hand.
